APSACO - African Peace and Security Annual Conference – 5th Edition Women, Peace and Security in Africa

Live Stream (Facebook, YouTube, Live Tweets)

October 20th, 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the 1325 UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR1325). This resolution has the merit of giving a powerful impetus to strengthening the role of women in peace building, and making the international community more aware of the centrality of women in all stages of engineering public policies related to security and stability locally, nationally and internationally.

At the continental level, African countries and regional organizations have interacted positively with the WPS agenda, despite of the difficulties that they encountered either for technical reasons related to the lack of coordination mechanisms for implementing the agenda on the ground, or for other reasons related to the state of non-peace and insecurity that prevails in several parts of the continent.

Undoubtedly, some progresses were accomplished with regards to the institutionalization of the WPS agenda. For instance, twenty-five African countries over 81 countries worldwide set up a national plan aiming to implementing the UNSCR1325. Furthermore, the AU adopted a Continental Results Framework (CRF) for monitoring and reporting the WPS agenda in Africa.

Nevertheless, implementation of WPS agenda derives its complexity from manifold intrusive dynamics threatening human security. These embrace crisis and civil war, prevailing inequalities in decision-making on peace and security issues, recruitment in military forces, violence against women and girls as well as using females as kamikazes in the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.

In the light of all these considerations, the fifth edition of the African Peace & Security Annual Conference (APSACO) set out to come to grips with the global issue « Women, Peace, Security », while focusing on African priorities with regards to: participation, prevention, and protection.

In this framework, more than 100 senior government officials, academics, media and civil society representatives from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, as well as thinkers from around the globe, will participate in the fifth edition of APSACO, from June 21 to 23, 2021 in order to demonstrate a renewed interest in African peace and security under this year’s theme “Women, Peace and Security in Africa”.
