High level readout on FOCAC 2021: Expert view on the evolution of the Chinese commercial footprint in African markets
Karim El Aynaoui, Executive President at Policy Center for the New South, will be speaking at the first readout of the 2021 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the evolution of Chinese commercial engagement with African nations organized by Atlantic Council Africa Center. This event is timed to coincide with the close of FOCAC in Dakar, Senegal. Participants in the discussion will include US and African policy-makers, global business, civil society and media leaders.
For over five years, US-Africa policy has increasingly been framed in the context of US China global competition. Rightly or wrongly, it is critical to ensure that the African view and approach to engaging with the Chinese is better understood in Washington. The White House is currently drafting a new Africa strategy, and this is an important opportunity to shape that agenda. By sharing expertise on this panel, myths can be dispelled and a more accurate approach better aligned with African realities and aspirations can be taken.
This event is taking place on Tuesday, November 30th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM ET
