Ihssane Guennoun, International Relations Specialist, and El Mostafa Rezrazi, Senior Fellow at Policy Center for the New South, are participating at the seminar on “Partnering on African Development Studies,” at the Center for African Studies. 

Ambassador Mohammed Loulichki will represent the Policy Center for the New South in the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium, which is a network bringing together foreign policy institutions and European research centres to encourage political and security-related dialogue.

A platform for policy innovation 
through exchange and mutual learning among leaders on agricultural growth and food security

The Malabo Montpellier Forum provides a platform for informed dialogue and exchange among African policy makers at the highest level on agriculture, nutrition and food security. It is co-chaired by The Right Honorable Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, Vice President of the Republic of Malawi and His Excellency Abdoulaye Bio-Tchané, Minister of Planning and Development, Republic of Benin. The Forum gathers representatives at the ministerial level from several African countries, senior executives of leading global development agencies and members of the Malabo Montpellier Panel. 

Marrakesh, Morocco

Since its inception in 2012, the Atlantic Dialogues (AD) conference has become a well-established annual meeting point taking place in Marrakesh, bringing together around 350 high-level senior officials, business leaders, academics, opinion shapers and civil society actors. Morocco has been host to these gatherings given its location and close relations to all countries bordering the Atlantic. Initially created in a dual effort between the Policy Center for the New South, formerly OCP Policy Center, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the event encourages a lively and informal exchange of views between young professionals and today’s leaders.

Amal El Ouassif, Research Assistant at Policy Center for the New South, will be presenting the paper “Understanding Terrorism and Organized Crime in Light of Fragile States,” co-written by Abdelhak Bassou and her, which is a case study on Mali, Chad and Niger.

Intergovernmental Conference on the Global Compact for Migration

Longer-term efforts to integrate migrants and refugees into local economies often remain fragmented, as policymakers struggle to cope with the immediate effects of humanitarian crises and large movements of refugees and migrants.  One mechanism to achieve this is through the promotion of entrepreneurship.

“Migration, Trade and the Global Economy”

The rapid expansion of a globalized economy supported by a trade and investment system of rules, processes and institutions seems to be interacting with migration flows in ways not experienced before. Trade agreements in a North-South context upgrade the skills and qualifications of foreign service providers. Aid for Trade (AfT) projects which are linked to diasporas’ transnational engagements support market mechanisms towards improved livelihood opportunities for unemployed youth in countries of origin and transit.

The global dialogue on migration is frequently stalled due to contradictory interests and positions between the countries of the North (Europe and North America) and those of the South. However, these positions do not take into account changes in migration profiles of countries, which can be departure, transit and receiving countries. Can multilateralism break with the North-South paradigm? Moreover, what is the added value of non-state actors (diaspora, NGOs, companies) or infra-state actors (local authorities) in the global governance of migration?

T-20 Inception Conference
