Adolf Hitler envisaged a Germanic empire ruling the planet for 1000 years. History imposed another scenario: after 12 years in power, the delusional führer swallowed a deadly cyanide capsule and, to be absolutely certain, shot himself with his personal Walther pistol. It was April, 30, 1945. The surrender of the Nazi Reich was near. The dictator’s personal guard followed the führer’s orders even while their hero was turning cold and carried Hitler and his wife of one day, Eva Braun, into the garden, adjacent to the underground bunker. They doused the bodies with petrol, and while Hitler was in flames, clicked their heels and raised their right arms in a final salute to a man judged by Winston Churchill as a “monster of wickedness, insatiable in his lust for blood and plunder.”

This young woman comes across as a striking beauty, body and soul. Born and raised in Enugu, Nigeria, she shines. She’s not only a voice for others, but first and foremost her own person. She founded She ROARs in 2016, a platform dedicated to unleash the potential of young female leaders in Africa and the diaspora. It really took off after an important gathering of more than 300 African women in August 2017 in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. The “Women Advancing Africa” conference was organized by the Graça Machel Trust, named after the former First Lady of Mozambique and widow of Nelson Mandela.

Almost 25 years have passed since the fourth world conference on women in Beijing in 1995. At that time, governments and women’s rights organizations adopted the Beijing Platform for Action to advance women’s rights globally. In November 2019, I attended the Paris Peace Forum panel discussion on ‘how to make the Generation Equality Forum of May-July 2020 a transformational moment’. Also in 2019, France and Mexico agreed to host the Generation Equality Forum in 2020. This Forum, convened by UN Women and organized in close partnership with civil society, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action.

When I think about women’s empowerment, I see it as a constant process of attaining milestones in our lives as individuals man and woman, and as society. When I think of women’s empowerment in the context of Morocco, a host of questions come to mind. First, how is the ‘Moroccan woman’? In other words, to what extent are Moroccan women seeking to empower themselves? Does empowerment, mean the same thing to every Moroccan woman? To what extent is it self-empowerment? And what are the roles of individuals, civil society, and government in empowering women in a diverse land of paradoxes? In this article, I attempt to frame my perspective on women’s empowerment in contemporary Morocco. I look briefly into some policy measures that highlight the importance of empowering women, though this is by no means an attempt to summarize or analyze policymaking on this issue. I examine the issue through a socio-cultural lens, ending with some thoughts on where we stand today on the path towards the empowerment of Moroccan women.

Epidemics are hardly a novelty. They have been shaping, mapping, and fundamentally altering human history from time immemorial. Exposing national vulnerabilities and feeding off poverty and insecurity, diseases have consistently threatened human and homeland security.

The outbreak in China has already affected economic sectors in Latin America. Is there more to come?
China’s economy has come to a sudden stop. Large parts of the country remain in shutdown mode after the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, with national passenger traffic declining by 85% on the Wednesday after the break compared to 2019.

This young German man with Congolese origins, educated in Germany, the United States and the Netherlands, has roots on three continents. He’s not only the epitomy of an Atlantic young leader – the way the Policy Center for the New South defines them – but now also a member of the 2019 ADEL cohort Alumni.
